Kyle Julius' impressive poker career thus far has been about finishing second all the time. That never deterred him from piling up massive live tournament earnings, despite the fact that before the end of Event #4 of the 2016 WSOP
, he had never had a live tournament win. He used to joke that he liked finishing runner-up better anyway, as that way he could steer clear of all the media attention. Event #4 though, the $1k Top-up Turbo NL Holdem one, finally brought him a gold bracelet, as well as some $143k, which nudged his lifetime live tournament profits over the $3 million mark. In order to accomplish the deed, Julius had to survive a starting field of 667 players.
The format of event #4 was a new one for the WSOP: it allowed players to top up their stacks in a number of different ways.

The actual buy-in to the event was $1k, which granted players access to 5k chips. For an additional $1k though, they could purchase 5k more chips, for a massive advantage. In addition to that, players could play their way into the tournament online at WSOP.com or live at the scene. All such entries got the 5k extra chip package as well. In fact, it was through one of these live qualifiers that Julius picked up his extra 5k chips.
Of the 667 entries that went into the middle, 252 were "simple" buy-ins, while 235 took advantage of the online top-up option. Some 99 live top-ups were registered, and 81 players paid up the extra $1k at the cage. Julius threw his extra 5k chips into the fray early.
