It now looks like the Big One for One Drop event of the 2012
WSOP will in fact take place, given that 22 players have already announced that they would take part. The event will feature a $1 million buy-in, which will obviously seriously limit the number of those who could even consider participating. Guy Laliberte of Cirque de Soleil fame is behind the event, which will feature a charitable touch as well: the event is called Big One for One Drop for a reason. $111,111k of each $1 million buy-in goes to Laliberte’s One Drop foundation, the goal of which is to help impoverished areas in various parts of the globe gain access to clean drinking water.
According to Laliberte, the $1 million event may only represent a small contribution, but the poker community is known to be extremely generous and there are other ways where it can and will make a difference.
Among those who have confirmed participation are Guy Laliberte himself, Tony G, Johnny Chan, Tom Dwan, Jonathan Duhamel, Bertrand Grospellier, Patrik Antonius, Daniel Negreanu and Gus Hansen. There are several other players who have confirmed that they too would take part, but wished to remain anonymous.
Jonathan Duhamel said that he was absolutely thrilled to take part for several reasons: on one hand he’s a spokesperson for the One Drop foundation, on the other, he’s looking forward to playing in such a deep prize-pool, deep stack event.
Players will receive 3 million-deep stacks in the beginning of the event and they will apparently play
NL Holdem.
The registration cap is set to 48. In case the cap is reached, the prize-pool will weigh in at a massive $40 million. 20% of the participants will get paid. Anyone can register, but those who entertain such thoughts should know that there’s a $50k deposit required to reserve a seat. The event is scheduled to start on July 1, 2012.
