EPT Barcelona Main Event – Day 4 Report

The 4th day of the EPT’s Barcelona Main Event saw 79 players return to the tables. A total of 5 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which, 24 players remained standing. The one to finish day 4 with the largest stack was Tom Middleton, the start of the day chip leader, who had 3.98 million chips bagged. Middleton was followed by Alejandro Perez, with 3.33 million chips. Anaras Alekberovas had a good day 4 run too: he finished with 2.63 million chips, in 3rd place.

At the beginning of the day, all eyes were on Mikalai Pobal, last season’s champion of the same event, who was still alive, albeit on a short-stack, and thus still retained some chances for a title defense. Unfortunately for him though, nothing became of it. He was down to his last 71k chips, when he got everything into the middle, holding an A,Qo against Glib Kovtunov’s pocket 9s. Two nines fell on the flop, to decisively hand the pot to Kovtunov, sending the reigning champion to the rail.
Russell Thomas was another notable victim of day 4, sent packing in 78th place. He was followed to the sidelines by Albert Daher and Kent Lundmark, who bit the dust in 72nd and 64th places respectively. Dermot Blain fared a bit better: he was eliminated in 52nd place. Mike Watson and Dimitar Danchev hit he rail as well, in 47th and in 44th places.
Team PokerStars Pro’s last representative, Christophe De Meulder was eliminated as well, during the last level of the day. Martin Staszko, of 2011 WSOP Main Event fame, was bounced as well, in 25th place, becoming the last victim of the day.

Middleton, who is a Skrill-sponsored player, will probably receive his buy-in back from the online payment processor, if he manages to outlast Valentino Konachiev, and right now the odds do indeed seem stacked in his favor.
