PartyPoker WPT Montreal – Day 1C Report

The third day of PartyPoker’s WPT Montreal Main Event saw 339 players belly up to the tables. With the last of the buy-ins in the middle, the bottom line was finally drawn on the poker tournament: a total of 862 players registered. The one who clinched the provisional chip lead at the end of the last day 1 flight was Sylvain Siebert. The player turn-out was a bit of a disappointment for the organizers: last year, the same event drew a starting field of 1,173 players.
10 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which Siebert’s stack of 230.5k chips ruled supreme. Despite the fact that no one else on Day 1C even managed to come close to his numbers, Siebert failed the clinch the overall lead. The largest stack of the tournament remained in possession of Sebastien Drolet-Poitras, who had had 270.8k chips bagged at the end of Day 1A.

Because re-buys were allowed, Day 1C saw several of the professionals who had bitten the dust on one of the previous two Day 1 flights return to the tables. It didn’t take long for the heads of the notables to begin rolling on Day 1C too. PokerStars’ Liv Boeree bit the dust, together with Trishelle Canatella, Andy Frankenberger and Justin Zaki.
Zaki got his last chips into the middle on an A,Qo, but unfortunately for him, it turned out he had run head first into an opponent’s pocket rockets. The rockets held, and Zaki’s WPT Montreal run was over. One player who fell before Zaki in rather similar fashion was Christian Harder. Harder staked his tournament life onto a pair of Ks he’d picked up, but he too found himself staring down pocket rockets. The rockets improved to a set on the river, and Harder was done.
