Jason Mercier’s 2014 Anti-alcohol Resolution

Most high stakes poker players are avid prop bettors, and even among this bunch, PokerStars’ Jason Mercier stands out quite a bit. Apparently, the beginning of each year prompts Mercier to make some sort of a lofty resolution or a prop bet which amounts to something similar.
Last year for instance, he set some pretty ambitious goals for himself, after he’d closed out 2012 with significant losses. While he failed to fulfill all his goals, he did finish the year with a handsome profit of over $1 million, so it’s safe to assume that at this point, the losing monkey is off his back.
Probably encouraged by his 2013 run, Mercier took to twitter the other day and he launched a prop bet challenge, which is basically about him staying away from alcohol for an entire year.
While the feat in itself may not seem to be a particularly difficult one to pull off for many, Mercier’s fellow poker players may know a thing or two about him that the public at large doesn’t, because many of them were quite quick to enquire about the terms of the prop bet. Thus far, there aren’t many specifics known about it, just that Mercier has set the minimum on the bet to $100k. Still, Andrew Chen, Mike McDonald and Brett Richey have already expressed interest, and others may be looking to get in on the action too.

Shaun Deeb tossed his five cents into the middle too, but he merely said he was more interested in a “who can drink more alcohol” prop bet than in Mercier’s proposition.
Whether or not Mercier will find any takers for his prop bet will probably be found out at the PCA, where he’ll get ample opportunities to peddle his idea to people who can actually seriously consider it. Tiffany Michelle has already expressed interest in talking the deal over with Mercier at the PCA.
