EPT Deauville – Day 5 Report

Greece’s Sotirios Koutoupas had the largest stack when the 5th day of the EPT’s Deauville Main Event kicked off, and he felt so comfortable as the chip leader that he didn’t relinquish the position all day. When the action was called, he was still the leader, with 6.4 million chips to his name. His stack was twice as big as that of second-place man, PokerStars pro Eugene Katchalov, who had 3.28 million chips bagged.
Harry Law was the only other player who managed to climb above the 3 million mark chips-wise.
Koutoupas is not a newcomer to the EPT felt. At the Prague Main Event last season, he made it all the way to second place. Had he won there, he would’ve become the first Greek player to win an EPT Main Event, an accomplishment which is now within his reach again.

On Day 5, Koutoupas scored no fewer than 3 eliminations. Dmitri Holdeev was one of his victims. Jean-Yves Malherbe was also sent packing by the Greek, as was Florian Ribouchon, whom he bounced on the very last hand of the day.
Koutoupas was the one who opened the action in that hand, with pocket 8s. Ribouchon decided to shove all-in in response, with pocket 6s. Koutoupas made the call, and his opponent failed to improve.
While Koutoupas appeared homed in on his goal all day, Katchalov started off on the wrong foot. He dropped a big pot to JP Kelly, but he then picked himself up and started looking like a true contender. He exacted some sweet revenge on Kelly and sent Tatu Maenpaa packing. After that elimination, he started small-balling, adding another million chips to his stack without seeing a showdown.
Harry Law, the other big-stack going into the final table, was the one who scored the first elimination of the day, that of Bahram Chobineh.
