EPT Malta - Day 1A Report

Hosted by the Portomaso Casino in Malta, the first Day 1 flight of the EPT's newly introduced Malta stop got going with 260 players bellying up to its tables. By the end of the first day of action, the field was reduced to 142 players.
The one who finished the day with the chip lead was Greece's Evangelos Tsairis, who managed to build a stack of 180.3k chips. Tsairis, although not one of your typical "name" competitors, is certainly not new to the EPT circuit: in January, he managed a deep run in the Deauville Main Event, taking down €22.1k for his 18th place. He wasn't the only one to finish with a massive 6-figure stack though. Ignat Liviu was second with 161.9k chips, followed by Alec Torelli in 3rd, with 133.1k. Thomas Muehloecker and John O'Shea finished with large stacks too, both making the top 10 on 6-figures.

The tournament got off to a great start for most involved, with the obvious exception of Swedish professional Michael Tureniec, who barely got enough time to warm up his chair. He became the first victim of the day and of the tournament, opening the floodgates for a bunch of other "name" players to hit the rail. Stephen Chidwick, Jeff Rossiter and Paul Newey were all forced to head to the rail empty-handed, as were PokerStars pros Liv Boeree and Fatima Moreira de Melo. Finland's beauty-queen Sara Chafak was bounced as well.
Sam Chartier and Jack Salter on the other hand survived, together with Dimitar Danchev and Ole Schemion (who finished with 36.2k chips to his name). A number of PokerStars pros made the cut as well, among them Theo Jorgensen and Marcin Horecki.
