Changing one's
online poker screenname has always been a bit of a sensitive issue as the operator likes to be able to keep proper track of what individual players do and how they play at the site. One could only really change his/her screenname on special occasions or more likely: never. The Microgaming network has decided to take its policy of protecting its recreational players one step further though, by allowing them to change their screennames an unlimited number of times. One can't really just get to switching monikers at a whim though: there are certain requirements that have to be fulfilled before a name-change can be requested: namely, players are required to log 1k hands or wait for 30 days following their last name-change.
The goal of the move is obvious: the network aims to keep parasitic players, who make a habit of following the weak around and preying on them, in check.

The changes will first be introduced across a number of selected skins on the network, beginning with September 22. The new policy will not just deal a blow to those actively involved in the exploitation of "fish", it will also deliver a jab to online operations who mine and analyze hand-history data, thus offering their members a massive edge over the recreational crowd that is the bread and butter of the Microgaming network.
The reason why the 1k hand mark was set in regards to conditioning the name-change is that - according to experts - it's a just small-enough sample-size to prevent data miners from drawing any sort of conclusions in regards to how certain players play. That limit is apparently flexible though, so if needed, operators will be able to tweak it.
