Ari Engel Wins 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event

The 2016 Main Event of the Aussie Millions wrapped up on Sunday, with Ari Engel walking away with the top prize and the bragging rights. Engel took down AUD 1.6 million after he bested the USA's Tony Dunst heads-up. Dunst's share of the prize-pool was AUD 1 million. A total of 732 players had registered for the event, a starting field of which only 7 returned on the last day of action. The player turnout wasn't shabby at all, in fact, the event registered the 4th largest starting field ever in the 19-year history of the poker tournament.
Local players were well represented in the final stretch, but the first one to hit the rail was an Australian too: John Apostolidis bit the dust, picking up AUD 210k for his efforts. He was followed to the rail by Kitty Kuo, whose 6th place was enough for a AUD 270k reward.

The Australian contingent would lose another member when Dylan Honeyman, one of the earlier chip leaders, was bounced in 5th place. Honeyman picked up AUD 340k. He was followed to the rail by the last hope of the home team, Alexander Lynskey, whose 4th place was worth AUD 445k. The elimination of Samantha Abernathy in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the tournament. Abernathy was rewarded with AUD 625k for her efforts.
The one who held the lead at the beginning of the heads-up bout was Dunst, but the game turned into a slug-fest, its heads-up stage stretching out to 123 hands, while the whole final table only took 92. In the end, after countless bluffs and skillful counter-moves, Engel emerged with the win.
