The $50k Poker Players' Championship was always one of the highlights of the WSOP: a sort of an all-star competition, featuring the best of the best in a valiant battle for the Chip Reese trophy. Participation in the tournament has never been particularly impressive - especially when compared to the crowds drawn by the other
WSOP events - as obviously, there aren't that many players out there who have $50k to invest into a single tournament but this year, a record low of 84 players has been set. Given that the tournament has indeed been running for 9 years, this is quite a statement. The previous low of 95 registrants has been set in 2009. It is worth noting though that back then, the event was still the $50k HORSE one. It was rebranded to the Poker Players' Championship in 2010 as its mixed-games lineup was expanded to nine games.

This year, two more games have been added to the mix, two rather controversial ones in tournament terms: Badugi and NL 2-7 Draw Lowball. Some participants expressed displeasure with the move, especially with the addition of Badugi, which isn't exactly a game popular with live tournament players. Other players worried about the possibility of still more games being added in the future. Brian Rast, the 2011 winner of the event was among those opposing the addition of Badugi. The record for the highest participation in the Poker Players' Championship is shared by two editions: the 2007 and the 2008 one, when 148 players took to the tables. Last year already marked a major drop: 102 players showed up, while in 2013, 132 had bought in.
