The 2010 WSOPE (the 4th ever edition of the World Series of Poker Europe), kicked off on Tuesday, in London. There were no fewer than 244 players willing to cough up the buy-in of £2,650, for the
NL Holdem 6-max event, even though the original cap for the said
poker tournament had been set to 240. The organizers never even considered sending any of the willing and able away though. The additional 40 players got slowly worked into the rotation, and by the end of the second level, everyone had seen action.
By the end of the first day, the starting field of 244 had been reduced to 31. Andrew Pantling was the one holding the chip lead after a rather stellar day, during which he amassed a stack of 106,100 chips. Pantling is yet to score a
WSOP cash, but by the way he took off in this poker tournament, he may well be on his way to securing a bracelet together with his very first cash too.
There were only two other players who managed to break past the 100k chip mark: Tai Tran and Chris Bjorin. Because of the sheer quality of the starting field though, there were a whole bunch of intimidating figures lurking in the middle of the surviving field when the day got called. Jeffrey Lisandro was there, together with Michael Abecassis and Phil Laak. Lisandro, the WSOP’s prime 2009 player of the year candidate, stormed right out of the gates amassing a nice stack from the get go. He later seemed to run out of steam though, but he still finished with a nice stack.
Phil Laak had a healthy 63k stack in front of him at the time of the final whistle. Abecassis will return to a 51k stack at the start of day 2.
Annette Obrestad hit the rail, together with Mike Matusow, Sorel Mizzi, Brandon Cantu and Antonio Esfandiari.
The professionals representing Team Full Tilt bowed out one after the other too, leaving the esteemed online poker operation without a single representative for day 2.
