2010 WSOPE – Event #2 kicks off

The second event of the 2010 WSOPE, the £5,000 PLO one, started out with a minor disappointment: only 120 players registered, quite a bit fewer than last year (when there were 154 registrants) and even fewer than the year before (165). The relatively low interest was probably due to the fact that WCOOP events were to kick off at supper time and that certainly kept many of the online pros away from the WSOPE tables.
The 120 players who bellied up to the Empire Casino’s poker tables were all top quality material though. Jeff Lisandro, Frank Kasella, Hoyt Corkins, Dave Ulliott and even the winner of event #1, Phil Laak was there. At the end of the day, only 49 players were still in the books, with Sam Stein leading the way.

Laak barely had any time to celebrate his event #1 win. He took his seat at the PLO table almost immediately, and he managed to survive the first day of action, making it to Day 2 of the poker tournament on a smaller than average stack.

Given the quality of the starting field, the caliber of the players hitting the rail on Day 1 didn’t really surprise anyone. Phil Ivey was among those eliminated, together with Annette Obrestad, John Juanda, Howard Lederer, Jason Mercier and Phil Hellmuth.
Jeff Madsen, Chad Brown and Barry Greenstein will be back for day 2 though, and joining them will be Hoyt Corkins, Vitaly Lunkin and John Racener. The player to lead all survivors into battle will be Samuel Stein. Stein spent most of his day at one of the toughest tables, and considering that he was the only one who managed to shoot past the 100k mark, his leader status is fully deserved. With the money bubble set to 18th place, nothing is guaranteed for Stein yet though.
