The history of the 2010 WSOPE’s High Rollers Heads Up title turned put to be a rather convoluted one, but in the end one thing became clear and certain: the winner is Gus Hansen and he fully deserves the title and the prize money that came with it.
The final heads-up confrontation of event #4 of the 2010 WSOPE was supposed to be a best of 3 bout, unlike the semi finals and all the other battles leading up to it. Sure enough, Jim Collopy and Gus Hansen, the two finalists, tore into each-other’s stacks on Friday, and they got two rounds of the three out of the way fast, splitting them. Because the Main Event was fast approaching and because both players concerned wanted to play in the Main Event, the organizers decided to interrupt the heads-up hostilities and to table the decisive round.
As both protagonists got knocked out of the Main Event early, it was decided that Sunday would be the best time for the two to reconvene and to settle the issue once and for all.
Once the action kicked off, it only took Hansen 4 hours to grab the win and the bracelet. Both players did a lot of adjusting after the first two heads-up matches they’d had. Hansen made a mistake early on, which meant that Collopy jumped out of the gate with the advantage. Then came a crucial hand in which Hansen’s rivered boat beat Collopy’s Jack trips to give the Great Dane the lead again. Things slowed down a bit in the wake of that hand as Hansen turned cautious, looking to chip away at his opponent’s stack little by little.
Collopy then turned on the heat and began shoving all in. Twice he managed to force Hansen to fold, but the third time the Dane made the call with pocket 4s and that was enough for him to wrap up the affair.
