2010 WSOPE Main Event – Day 1A report

The first day 1 flight of the 2010 WSOPE’s Main Event kicked off the other day, as 137 players coughed up the £10,000 buy-in to participate in one of the most popular and richest live
poker tournaments on European soil. In case you were wondering, despite the huge interest, that number was 20 players off the pace set by last year’s Main Event. The first ever WSOPE Main Event champion, Annette Obrestad was the one who kicked off the event trough the traditional “Shuffle up and Deal”. The day would hold no other highlights for the Norwegian player though: she was eliminated early when her top pair top kicker ran into an opponent’s two pair.
By the end of the day, of the 137 starters, fewer than 80 were still standing. Nicholas Levi finished the first day 1 flight with the largest stack, namely with a 153,850 monster.
Levi’s Day 1A play was the perfect combination of luck and skill. He hit tons of flops, but he was right there on top of things when needed. He bluffed Scott Montgomery off a hand in which he only had a Qd, 10d.
Levi was the one leading the French contingent, but others did well too. Fellow countryman Arnaud Mattern took a huge pot off Brandon Cantu to propel his stack close to the top. Later on, he dropped some chips though and finished the day with an 80k stack.
Brandon Cantu eventually bowed out of the tournament, together with Daniel Cates, Andy Bloch and Sorel Mizzi. For a while there, it seemed like Vanessa Selbst would make the casualty list too, but she managed to claw her way back from the edge.
Phil Hellmuth made yet another memorable entry, once again accompanied by 11 models all dressed up as Lady Gaga, but his poker focus once again fell short: he busted out within the first few hours.
