The second ever edition of the Caesars Cup took place on Wednesday in Cannes, France, and we’re glad to report that Team Americas has managed to even the score, making the embarrassing 2009 loss all but forgotten. Phil Hellmuth, the captain of team Americas, had managed to put together a stellar lineup, although the Bertrand Grospellier-led European side wasn’t exactly shabby either.
Besides Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Johnny Chan, Jason Mercier and Ben Lamb also played for the Americas. The Europeans were represented by Max Lykov, Jake Cody, Gus Hansen and Tony G.
The format of the event was quite unique and interesting in the same time. The first test pitted two teams of two players from both sides against one another. The stacks and the hands were the same for each round, but alternating players would play each street. Jason Mercier and Ben Lamb took on Tony G and Jake Cody in this one.
Mercier secured the early advantage for his side, when he pushed all-in on a flop of Jx, 9h, 4h holding pocket rockets. Cody jumped in too, holding Kh, 8h for the 4-card heart flush. The turn and the river failed to fill the flush though and Europe was down to 8k chips.
The next hand saw the Europeans bounce back into contention with a double-up. Their joy was short-lived though. On the very next hand, the chips were again in the middle on a 10h, 8h vs Q,9o match-up. The Americans’ hand held and the stage was over.
The second stage of the event was a nearly similar 2vs 2 affair, with the only difference that alternate hands were played. The final hand of this stage of the event saw Daniel Negreanu shove all-in for the Americas, on a Kh, 8h against Gus Hansen’s A,9o. Hansen won the hand and Team Europe pulled even.
The third stage of the event saw Johnny Chan and Bertrand Grospellier battle it out heads-up. Chan won that one for the Americas. The 4th stage of the event saw Phil Hellmuth dispose of Max Lykov heads-up to seal the deal for good.
