The LAPT has included a Colombian stop in its schedule for the first time ever and the choice proved to be an inspired one indeed. No fewer than 681 players showed up in the Allegre Casino in Medellin, handily beating the previous LAPT attendance record set by the 621 entrants of the Vina del Mar stop in March. Given the respectable size of the starting field, no fewer than 28 players returned to the tables at the beginning of the third day. When everything was said and done, Julian Menendez stood triumphant, trophy in hand and the $64.7k top prize in his pocket.
The majority of the day 3 starting field was South American, but there was an Australian and a US player in contention as well. Several of the players represented the home team.
As soon as the action kicked off, the field switched into high gear, and before they knew it, the final table was reached.
The first victim of the day was Roxana Azar, who busted out in 28th place, taking home a $2,492 reward.
She was followed to the rail by Tulio Bertoli, Rafael Velandia and Ernesto Barros. The final table bubble burst with the elimination of Carlos Ponce in 10th place. Ponce picked up $9,654 for his efforts.
The player who started the final table from pole position was Jonathan Monsalves. Monsalves picked up most of his chips when the bubble burst. Ponce had pocket Ks, on which he staked his tournament life without a second thought. Unfortunately for him though, Monsalves had pocket rockets. The board only landed blanks and the final table was set.
It didn’t take long for the first victim of the final table to bite the dust: Jhon Jairo shoved all-in on an A,J and he got a call from Alexis Gomez, who had pocket rockets.
The heads-up stage of the action saw Menendez lock horns with Monsalves. The final hand of the event saw Menendez’s pocket 4s triumph over Monsalves’ A,5o.
