The final table action at the end of the 2011 PCA’s $10k NL Holdem Main Event was a rather amazing one. It lasted for about 10 hours, at the end of which, Galen hall emerged with the win, taking down the $2.3 million top prize.
Philippe Plouffe started the final day with the shortest stack and sure enough he became the first victim of the day. Under pressure to get something going early, he picked up a pair of Qs and wasted no time in getting all his chips into the middle. He was called by Sam Stein, who had A,Ko. Another A fell on the river and the first victim bit the dust.
Max Weinberg got crippled in a multi-way pot to find himself in a desperate position. He too woke up with Q,Q in the BB and he obviously pushed all his remaining chips into the middle looking to bounce back. Mike Sowers called him with As, Jc and proceeded to hit the nut spade flush on the board to send Weinberg packing.
Bolivar Palacios fell next (in 6th place), to Galen Hall, who had nothing but a high-card, but that was just enough to edge his opponent.
Chris Oliver picked up a two pair against Mike Sowers’ pocket fours to send him to the rail as well.
At that point in the tournament, Anton Ionel had the shortest stack, but Stein ran out of patience. He also ran his Ah,9h into Chris Oliver’s Ad,Qd. The board failed to come to his aid and he was eliminated in 4th place.
Ionel, who had only been hanging on by a thread for a while was disposed of as well.
The heads-up action between Oliver and Hall started out with a perfect hand which saw Hall’s straight dominated by Oliver’s boat. Amazingly, Hall managed to duck the bullet and bounced back to win it all.
