Day 17 of the 2011 WCOOP almost saw the WCOOP bracelet record broken once again, by the same Anders Berg who had held it: Berg came tantalizingly close to scoring his 4th WCOOP bling, but he was thwarted heads-up by Mayu Roca Uribe.
The confrontation took place in the $500 Stud Hi/Lo event, which saw an initial starting field of 262 players belly up to its tables.
Berg was the one who had the chip lead going into the final table. Mayu Roca had a rather short-ish stack at that stage, but that would soon change. He was the one who drew first blood at the final table as he sent 7PRS packing in 8th place.
7th place went to a player named “Itto” who was eliminated by Ilya Gorodetsky.
A key hand of the final table saw Mayu Roca take down a massive half-pot on a low he made. That hand sent SonnyRamone home in 4th place, setting up the 3-handed stage.
Anders Berg swung into action next, managing to push ramondemon77 out of the way in 3rd place.
Going into the heads-up stage, Roca had a commanding chip lead and he managed to take full advantage of it. In the final hand of the tournament, Berg had a low and a wheel draw, and he shoved all-in on 5th street, but he missed both his draws while Roca had a pair of Qs to win the entire pot and to take home the $25.5k top prize. Berg was rewarded with $18.9k for his efforts.
Another event that played down to a winner on Day 17 was the $300 Mixed PLO/
Holdem event. Tim Piper won this one for a $45.7k reward, after he struck a two way deal with eventual second-place finisher PJShark78. The latter took home $39.4k for his efforts.
Griffin Benger finished 9th. Another deep-running notable was Andras Nemeth who picked up $1,788 for his 17th place.
