2011 WSOP Action – Jake Cody Wins $25k Heads-up Event

WSOP action was kicked into high gear over the last few days. Things sped up considerably with one event starting up after the other, and with the first few
WSOP bracelets disappearing rapidly in the pockets of their now rightful owners.
The $25k NL Holdem Heads-up event was arguably the most prestigious one of the series so far, both in terms of buy-in and prize-pool sizes as well as from the point of view of the quality of the attending competition. Going into the final day of action, all eyes were on Gus Hansen, who had cut a wide path through the field over the previous few days, appearing fully capable and intent on securing victory. Eric Froehlich was still in contention as well, and pundits had it down to the two of them for the final match-up of the event.
Lady Luck had other plans though. Both Hansen and Froehlich were eliminated during the semi-finals, by Jake Cody and Yevgeniy Timoshenko respectively.
The heads-up battle between Cody and Timoshenko was never really in doubt. Cody had already secured an
EPT title and a WPT one to go with it, so what it came down to was his eventually successful attempt to secure the Triple Crown.
Timoshenko never really seemed to be able to get anything going throughout their confrontation. The last hand was the perfect illustration of this luck- based mismatch between the two contestants.
Cody got all his chips into the middle holding Kc, 9c against Timoshenko’s A,5o, but he caught right up by hitting a K on the flop. The turn and the river blanked out, giving Cody the title, the Triple Crown and the $851,192 top prize.
Both Hansen and Froehlich had to settle for second fiddle at the end of the tournament, although they both looked like they would go all the way at one point. Other notables who bowed out during earlier rounds were Tom Dwan, John Duthie and Daniel Negreanu.
