Day 10 of the
2011 WSOP carried some special significance: it was the day which gave away the first $10k World Championship bracelet, to Wyaceslav Zhukov. While the quite Russian stole much of the spotlight for the day, other things happened on day 10 as well, like David Diaz’s win in the $1,500 Triple Chance NL Holdem event.
On the penultimate day of the event, the field had failed to play down to the official final table, which meant that 10 hopefuls shoved up on the last day to do battle for the title.
Steve Watts was the first one to try to get something going, having picked up a couple of 4s. Corey Hastings was quick to make the call with pocket rockets though and Watts’ tournament came to a screeching halt in 10th place. His elimination set up the official final table.
At the start of the final table hostilities, Nicholas Rampone held the largest stack. Bill Chen was in contention as well, his stack big enough to claim 3rd place in the chip counts. Taking advantage of his more than decent stack-size, Chen played well, at one point taking over the chip lead. He then ran into Diaz, and his flush draw fell to the latter’s nut flush. That hand left Chen severely crippled and he bowed out in 4th place on the very next hand, courtesy of the same Diaz. Chen still managed to add a respectable $100k+ to his roll.
The heads-up stage of the event saw David Diaz square off against Anders Meli. Diaz started with a decent lead over his opponent and he milked his advantage properly, keeping Meli under constant pressure and pushing his stack to about 1 million chips before delivering the final blow.
The final hand of the day saw Meli’s pocket 4s go up against Diaz’s A,10o. The flop gave Diaz the lead and he never looked back from there, securing the win, the bracelet and the top prize of $352k.
