2011 WSOP-E – Day 1B Report

Although there was word that more folks would show up for the second day 1 flight of the WSOP-E Main Event than for the first one, 283 players bellied up to the tables at the beginning of the day. While the Day 1A record wasn’t broken, the total starting field made up of 593 players put all previous WSOP-E Main Event attendance records to shame. It is now obvious that the organizers were right to move the series from London to Cannes.

The second day 1 ended with Lari Sihvo sitting at the top of the chip-counts. Tommy Vedes had an awesome day as well. He finished second with a stack of 142k chips, falling just short of Sihvo’s 144k. Other players who finished close to the top of the pops were Alex Kostritsyn and Constant Rijkenberg.
The high number of ‘name’ players present in the top echelons was an accurate reflection of the overall makeup of the start of the day field. Benny Spindler and Bertrand Grospellier shared a table with Graeme Putt, James Akenhead and Jonathan Duhamel.

Filippo Candio started well out of the gates, clinching the early chip lead. Michael Mizrachi had secured another WSOP bracelet in one of the earlier events, and he took it easy on Day 1B of the Main Event. In fact, he took it so easy he hit the rail in the process. His brother, Robert stayed alive though, and for a while he even led the field when he took over from Candio. He too played at an extremely tough table, where Sandra Naujoks, Sorel Mizzi and Dominik Nitsche also played.
With so many illustrious names in the field, it was inevitable that the list of casualties become a litany of ‘name’ competitors as well. Bertrand Grospellier made that list, together with Steve Billirakis, Viktor Blom and Sam Trickett. Matt Gianetti, Jonathan Duhamel and Daniel Negreanu were also eliminated.
