2011 WSOP-E Main Event – Day 1A Report

Last year, a total of 346 players showed up for the Main Event and James Bord picked up the laurels. This year, the first day 1 flight of the €10,400 affair attracted 310 players, almost equaling last year’s total turn-out. For day 1B another similarly-sized field is expected, so this Main Event is pretty much guaranteed to become the largest WSOP-E Main Event ever. The day consisted of 6 levels of play, at the end of which 165 players were left. Jamie Rosen finished the day in the lead, having amassed a stack of 162k chips.
Several players finished with stacks exceeding the 100k chip mark, among them Chris Moorman, Dermot Blain, Johnny Chan and Emil Patel.

Sam Holden, Erik Seidel and Tristan Wade also made it past the day.
Chris Moorman owed most of his chips to the elimination of Jason Mercier which he managed to pull off on an A,Ko vs Js,10s match-up. The flop was K,J,4. The turn fell the 5s and the river a Q to send Mercier to the rail.
Phil Hellmuth has been questing for that illusive 12th bracelet for what now seems like forever, and he came close to clinching it several times. He won’t come close in this event: he was eliminated on Day 1A, by Michael Telker, who had Ac,9c against Hellmuth’s K,9o. The board fell a bunch of blanks and Telker’s A-high held up to send Hellmuth packing.
Hellmuth wasn’t the only high-profile player to bite the dust though. He was followed to the sideline by Tom Dwan, Justin Bonomo, Sam Stein, Matt Stout and Tyler Bonkowski.

Given the handsome player turn-out on Day 1A, and given the fact that most of the players like to get going on the last Day 1 flight, organizers are hopeful that even more players will show up for Day 1B. Regardless of the eventual Day 1B starting field, the record for the biggest WSOP-E Main Event seems to be locked up already.
