2011 WSOP – Jason Mercier Strikes Gold

There was only one bracelet given away on day 23 of the 2011 WSOP, and even that didn’t end up in the possession of a player who’s never tasted WSOP glory before. PokerStars pro Jason Mercier was the one who got his hands on the bracelet, his second career one.
15 players returned to the tables on the final day of the $5k PLO Six-Handed Event. Despite the fact that the majority of the starting field had long been done away with, the final 15 was still loaded with big names. As they played down to the final table, Jason Mercier appeared to assert control, and by the time the final stretch of the action kicked off, he had secured the chip lead. Still there was a dark cloud looming over the Frenchman’s chances to add #2 to his tally: David Chiu made the final table too, second in chips no less, and as far as WSOP experience was concerned, he definitely had the edge: he had already won 3 bracelets.
Fortunately for Mercier though, Chiu could find no traction at the final table, and he bowed out in 4th place.

Eventually, it all came down to Mercier vs Hans Winzeler and Winzeler had the chip lead. The heads-up battle was a fairly balanced one: the chip lead went back and forth between the two contestants. Mercier eventually managed to build up a 1 million chip lead, but Winzeler would surely have bounced back again, had it not been for a huge hand that eventually decided the winner.
The money went all-in on a flop of 9d,4s,3d. Mercier had a pair of 3s and a straight draw against Winzeler’s pocket Ks. The 10 on the turn didn’t change much, but the 7 on the river delivered the coup de grace and Mercier picked up his second bracelet.
To go with his new bling, he also pocketed $619k.
