2011 WSOP Main Event – Money Bubble Reached

Day 45 of the
2011 WSOP, which was day 4 of the Main Event, saw an important milestone reached: the money bubble. 852 players returned to the tables of the Main Event with one immediate goal in mind: to make sure they weren’t going to go home empty-handed. The two players who started with the largest stack were Patrick Poirier and Daryl Jace. They both lost their leading positions by the end of the day though. Manoj Viswanathan was the one who clinched the chip lead. WSOP-C champion Sam Barnhart had an excellent day as well: he ended up second in chips.
Phil Hellmuth had nursed a short-stack all through Day 2B and Day 3, and somehow he seemed to catch a lucky break every time his elimination was imminent. On Day 4 however, he ran out of luck. He ended up hitting the rail before the bubble, thus confirming that all his previous efforts had indeed been in vain.
Martin De Knijff was the one responsible for Hellmuth’s elimination. De Knijff had a K,Qo versus Hellmuth’s pocket 3s and he caught a Q on the flop for the top pair. Nothing changed on the turn and the river and Hellmuth was bounced.
In about 3 hours, the field approached the bubble which burst after about another hour. Reza Kashani was the one whose elimination gave the rest of the field a serious cause for celebration: he went out on the bubble, when he shoved all-in holding a K,J on a board of K,Q, 9 against Joseph Cheong’s pocket Qs. The turn and the river failed to bail him out and he was done. He would not have to leave empty handed though. The sponsors have once again stepped in, offering him a free entry to next year’s Main Event.
The money bubble burst at 693rd place, so those still in the books will battle it out knowing that their time had not been invested in vain.
