The end of the €10,400 Main Event signaled the end of the 2011 WSOPE. Elio Fox, the player who started the final table of the event with the chip lead pocketed the bracelet and the €1.4 million prize.
The Main Event saw 593 players belly up to its tables on its first two day 1 flights combined, easily surpassing the previous attendance record for a
WSOPE Main Event. The prize-pool was a massive €5.69 million, and 64 players got to go home with a profit. Of course, the lion’s share of the prize-pool would be divided among the 8 final table participants.
Although he started the final table with the largest stack, Shawn Buchannan was not the first one to bite the dust. That dubious honor befell Max Silver, who ran his A,Ko into Chris Moorman’s pocket Js for the classic coin-flip. The coin flip didn’t go his way, and Silver was bounced in 8th place. He still picked up a more than decent €115k.
Jake Cody was the next one to head to the rail. He got his chips in well, holding pocket Js against Fox’s pocket 10s, but the board decided it was going to give Fox a straight, and thus Cody too was confined to the sidelines.
Shawn Buchannan nursed a short stack for most of the day, but eventually crunch-time came for him too. He got his stack in on pocket Js against Blain’s A,4. The A on the river signaled the end of the tournament for Buchannan.
Blain couldn’t enjoy his success for long: he was the next one out the door in 5th place. Brian Roberts was the one responsible for his demise.
Roberts himself busted out next, sent to the rail by Chris Moorman. Moritz Kranich’s elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage. The turning point of the heads-up bout came about 20 hands into the action, when Fox managed to take a large portion of Moorman’s chips.
Eventually, the tournament was decided by an A,7o vs A,10o match-up in the final hand. Moorman took home €800k for his second place.
