2012 EPT Barcelona High Roller Event – Day 1 Report

The 9th season of the EPT got quite a start the other day: the green felt hostilities kicked into high gear with the €50k Super High Roller event at the EPT’s Barcelona stop. 54 players showed up for the event, coughing up the buy-in, which in itself would suffice as a top prize for most live and
online poker players out there. There were European and US pros in the field, together with a few online daredevils. At the end of the day’s hostilities, Steve O’Dwyer had the largest stack weighing in at 1.2 million chips. So large was the difference between O’Dwyer’s stack and that of the second place man, that he had almost twice as many chips bagged.
Despite his large end-of-the-day lead, O’Dwyer’s day was anything but smooth sailing. He was among the first to lose their buy-ins and he was forced to re-buy, becoming the first player to thusly offer himself a second chance in the
poker tournament. Indeed, for now, the decision appears to have been a healthy one.
Erik Seidel had a good day too. Unlike O’Dwyer, Seidel didn’t have to re-buy. He shot right out of the gates in the beginning and he parlayed his good run into a 738k stack at the end of the day.
Some players seemed to abuse the unlimited re-buy feature offered by the event. Jonathan Duhamel bit the dust first at the hands of John Juanda, whose pocket rockets got the better of his pocket Ks. He re-bought without hesitation and he was eliminated again by Vadzim Kursevich, this time on a classic coin-flip of pocket Qs vs A,K. Although he did not return yet again, Duhamel promised he would re-buy and return on day 2.
Other players who were eliminated on day 1, but who apparently plan on re-surfacing on Day 2, were Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey and Sorel Mizzi. Bryn Kenney was eliminated too, together with Luke Schwartz and Michael Tureniec.
