2012 Five Diamond World Poker Classic – Day 1 Report

The $10k Five Diamond World Poker Classic never fails to attract a large crowd of registrants peppered with “name” competitors and high rollers. This year was no exception either: no fewer than 374 players coughed up the massive buy-in on Tuesday, and several of them ended up buying in more than once.
The first day of action saw about 5 levels logged, at the end of which Jeremy Kottler emerged with the chip lead.
Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, Eric Seidel, Vanessa Selbst, James Dempsey, Michael Mizrachi and Sam Trickett all played. Randall Flowers saw action as well and he finished the day with a large stack. His 119.4k chips landed him in second place behind Kottler’s 134.9k. Quite possibly the most important hand that Flowers played was a coin-flip one which resulted in a massive pot he managed to take down from Alex Outhread. Tom Marchese made the top 10 too: he finished 9th, with a stack of 84.4k chips.
Day 1 of the
poker tournament was all about Kottler though, who put on quite a performance. Other players who managed to climb over the 100k chip mark were Russell Thomas (who finished 3rd with 108k chips), Gheorghe Gradinaru (4th with 107.4k), and Shawn Cunix (5th with 102k). Tony Dunst and Jeremy Ausmus managed to finish the day with large stacks as well. Antonio Esfandiari survived too.
All-in-all, close to 100 players lost their tournament lives on Day 1, although they may yet re-surface, because re-buying is allowed on Day 2 too. Carlos Mortensen and Yevgeniy Timoshenko were among the victims on Day 1, but they are both expected to take advantage of the re-buy opportunity on Day 2. The final prize-pool will only be determined at the end of the 8th level.
