Day 15 of the
2012 WSOP was a truly historic one, the kind of day that may well end up in the annals of poker history as the day when the Poker Brat broke his own bracelet record by winning his 12th WSOP gold and by knocking the non-Holdem monkey off his back with the same move. Yes indeed, Phil Hellmuth is back in shape, and he has just proved all his haters and critics who had written him off wrong, by pocketing the top honors of event #18, the $2.5k Seven Card Razz one.
18 players returned to the tables on the final day of the event, and it was clear from the get-go that Hellmuth wouldn’t find the going easy by any means. Brandon Cantu held the chip lead when the action kicked off. Barry Greenstein, Scott Fischman and Brendan Taylor were also in contention.
There were other ‘name’ pros looking to score some jewelry too: Scott Clements was the first one to bite the dust. He was followed to the rail by Chris Wallace, Dan O’Brien and Chris Viox. Before anyone knew it, the final table was reached. By that time, Hellmuth was right up there at the top, only a few thousand chips behind Brendan Taylor who had a precarious grasp on the leader’s spot.
Barry Greenstein made it all the way to 6th place, where he fell at the hands of start of the day chip leader Brandon Cantu.
The heads-up stage of the event saw Hellmuth go up against Don Zewin, the player who was there in the top 3 in the 1989 WSOP event in which The Brat took down his first gold.
The rest – as they say – is history. Hellmuth earned a $182k reward to go with his 12 bracelet.
In event #17, the $10k PL Holdem one, Phil Ivey was looking to pull a similar stunt, however his attempt was met with slightly less success. He was defeated heads-up by Andy Frankenberger, picking up $275.5k for his efforts.
