2012 WSOP – Day 17 Report

The 17th day of the 2012 WSOP saw two more bracelets awarded and a total of 6 events roll on. The first bracelet-awarding event was event #21, the $1k NL Holdem one, which had 17 players return to its tables on its last day. The first 7 players bit the dust relatively quickly on day 17. Dan Smith was then bounced, bursting the final table bubble and bringing the event into its official home stretch.
The player with the most chips in his stack was Noah Vaillancourt, who had almost two and a half million to his name. Jamie Armstrong and Eric Baldwin were right up there at the top too.
Baldwin was eliminated in 5th place by Vaillancourt, but both Vaillancourt and Armstrong made it to the three-handed stage of the poker tournament. Joining them at the top was Michael Gathy. Vaillancourt was the first of the three to bite the dust. The heads-up stage of the event lasted for two full levels. The final hand saw Gathy’s pocket 10s get the better of Armstrong’s pocket 9s. Gathy picked up $440k for his efforts.

The other event which played down to a winner on Day 17 was event #22, the $2.5k Triple Draw Lowball one. 9 players returned to action in this one, among them Josh Arieh and Layne Flack. The two pros didn’t stir up much mayhem though. As a matter of fact, they were the first two victims of the final table, busting out in 9th and 8th places respectively.
Shawn Buchannan, Farzad Bonyadi and David Baker carried on the pro torch. Buchannan was eliminated in 6th place, followed by Bonyadi in 4th and Baker in 3rd. The heads-up battle was between Randy Ohel and Benjamin Lazer. Ohel came out on top, his 9,6,4,3,2 low besting Lazer’s pair in the final hand. The winner picked up $145.2k for his efforts.
Event #23, the $3k NL Holdem 6-handed one, played down to the final 18, while event #24, the $5k Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or better split one, saw the final 27 reached, with Phil Ivey leading the pack.
