2012 WSOP – Day 18 Report

While it was supposed to award two bracelets like the majority of days thus far, Day 18 of the
2012 WSOP fell short of the mark. The reason was a simple one: in the event in which Phil Ivey was looking to win his 9th bracelet, the $5k Omaha Hi/Lo split 8 or better event, the two remaining players couldn’t play down to a winner try as hard as they could.
Thus, the only bracelet was awarded by event #23, the $3k NL Holdem six handed event. 18 players returned for the third day of six-handed action, set on playing down to a winner. Artem Metalidi was the player with the largest stack when the action kicked off. There were plenty of noteworthy threats in the remaining field though: Eugene Katchalov was still playing, together with Bertrand Grospellier and Freddy Deeb. Scott Montgomery and Andrew Lichtenberger were also among the contestants.
During the first hour of action alone, 6 players bit the dust, among them Katchalov. Eventually, it was all down to Simon Charette and Artem Metalidi. The final hand of the event saw Charette’s pocket 6s crush Metalidi’s single A on a board which failed to hit either hand involved. Charette picked up $567k to go with his new bling, while Metalidi was rewarded with $350k.
All eyes were on event #24 though, in which Phil Ivey was still in contention, behind a large stack no less. 27 players returned for what was supposed to be the final day of action, among them Mike Matusow, Scotty Nguyen, Brian Hastings, Dan Kelly and Brendan Taylor.
Phil Ivey did put in an excellent performance, but he eventually bowed out in 3rd place, leaving Nguyen and Joe Cassidy to battle it out for the title. 13 hours after the action had kicked off, the hostilities were eventually stopped without a winner being determined.
Three other events saw action on Day 18 too: the $1.5k Limit Holdem Shootout event played down to its final table, while the $3k PLO event and the $1.5k HORSE event got rolling.
