Day 19 of the
2012 WSOP was an especially prolific one in terms of awarded bracelets. There were 5 events running, three of which managed to play down to their respective winners.
Event #24, the $5k Omaha Hi/Lo split 8 or better one was sure to reach its finish line since only two players returned to the green felt. Joe Cassidy and Scotty Nguyen had found it impossible to decide the fate of the bracelet the day before, so they were forced to return bent on serious deeds this time around.
Apparently, the one who had asked for the break was Nguyen, who found himself at a 1-3.5 chip disadvantage. Despite the break he got, Nguyen didn’t really manage to get anything going on the last day of action. Cassidy dominated from start to finish almost, putting his chip advantage to great use.
Nguyen did manage some decent bounce-back attempts twice, but eventually it just wasn’t meant to be.
Before the final showdown, Nguyen had managed to weather about 6 all-ins. The last hand of the event saw his two pair fall to his opponent’s Broadway straight. Since there were no qualifying lows, Cassidy scooped the pot, taking down the bracelet, together with the $294.7k top prize.
Nguyen had to settle for the runner-up’s share of $182.2k.
Event #25, the $1.5k Limit
Holdem Shootout, yielded another winner. 10 players returned to action on the last day of the event. Brian Meinders managed to clinch the top spot in this one, picking up the $116.1k top prize.
Darin Thomas was the runner-up in this one, earning a $71.7 reward for his efforts.
Christopher Vitch finished 3rd.
The $3k PLO event (#26) saw 18 players square off on its last day. Vadzim Kursevich was the chip leader at the beginning of the day. His large stack was enough to tide him through the attrition all the way to 3rd place. He picked up a $158.5k prize. The heads-up bout at the top of the pops was between Austin Scott and Brett Richey. Scott was the one who clinched the bracelet, together with a $361.7k prize. Richey was rewarded with $223.4k.
