2012 WSOP – Day 2 Report

The first red-blooded, open WSOP event of the 2012 edition of the Series kicked off on Day 2 (Monday). The first WSOP bracelet of the year was also awarded on day 2.
Chiab Saechao was the player who started the second day of the $500 Casino Employees NL Holdem event with the largest stack and he made good use of his advantage: he swept away the competition on his way to the first gold bracelet of the 2012 Series. James Routos and Matthew Wilmot were also near the top of the pops when the day 2 action kicked off. Ty Stewart was the one though who drew the limelight. Donald Michael was the player who sent the WSOP’s executive director to the rail. The flop read Kd, 9d, 2s when Stewart decided to make an intimidation move and put about half his stack into the pot with a J,9o. Unfortunately for him, he found his match in Donald Michael, who raised him, forcing him to push all-in. Michael had the goods indeed: his K,10o gave him a top pair with a decent kicker. The turn and the river fell two threes and Stewart was done.
Eventually, it all came down to the heads-up battle between Patricia Baker and Saechao. The final hand of the event was a true-blue perfect hand: Baker had a straight against Saechao’s flush.

Event #2, the $1.5k NL Holdem one, kicked off on day 2 too. Although a relatively low-buy-in event, #2 drew a truly impressive starting field studded with names like Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Gavin Smith, Jonathan Duhamel, Chino Rheem and Maria Ho. Of the ‘name’ crowd, only Phil Hellmuth made it through the day. Maria Ho was the one responsible for Phil Ivey’s elimination, although she then proceeded to bust before the end of the day too.
Sadan Turker clinched the provisional chip lead. He was followed by Brandon Cantu and Layne Flack. Other ‘name’ players who made it past the day 1 hurdle were John Juanda, Jason Mercier and Carter Gill.
