2012 WSOP – Day 22 Report

Day 22 of the 2012 WSOP saw 5 events roll on, among them the record-setting Seniors’ $1k NL Holdem event. 33 players returned to the tables of event #29, looking to play down all the way to a bracelet. Unfortunately, those plans proved to be way too ambitious: at the end of the day, when the dust settled and the action was called, there were still 4 players alive. The chip leader is Dennis Phillips. Phillips had quite an up and down day, but his aggressive, high-variance play yielded nice results in the end: he had more than 5.3 million chips bagged.
At one point, Phillips almost bit the dust: Martin Fitzmaurice got him all-in holding pocket Ks against Phillips’ A,2o. The board however leapt to the rescue and bailed Phillips out in spectacular fashion: by giving him a two pair on the river.
Hoyt Corkins also made the final four, together with Allyn Jaffrey Schulman.

Event #30, the $1.5k 2-7 Lowball one, was responsible for the only bracelet of the day. 7 players returned to the tables of this event, among them Michael Mizrachi, Brandon Cantu, Andrew Lichtenberger and Erick Lindgren. Eventually, none of these big guns came through. Instead, it was Larry Wright who rose to the top, despite the fact that early on, Michael Mizrachi had shot off to a dominating lead over everyone else.
Lindgren bit the dust in 5th place, followed by Mizrachi. Lichtenberger joined them on the sidelines shortly, setting up the heads-up stage of the event between Cantu and Wright. The rest, as they say, is history. Wright picked up a $101.9k prize to go with his new jewelry. Cantu was rewarded with $63k.

Event #31, the $1.5k NL Holdem event, played past its money bubble on Day 22, while event #32, the $10k HORSE one, played down to the final 15.
Event #33, the $1k NL Holdem event got going with 2,795 players. At the end of its first day, 231 players remained.
