2012 WSOP – Day 38 Report

Day 38 of the 2012 WSOP was a memorable one indeed, for one simple reason: it was the day that shattered all records regarding the size of a single prize ever awarded by any sports event anywhere on earth. Antonio Esfandiari won the $1 million buy-in Big one for One Drop event, pocketing more than $18 million for his efforts. Sam Trickett, the runner-up in the event, also picked up more than $10 million. Event #53, the $1.5 NL Holdem one, saw two players return to action: Vladimir Mofodichev took on Neil Willerson heads-up Willerson was the one who managed to clinch the bracelet and with it a $737.2k prize. Mefodichev earned $456.2k for his runner-up spot.

Another event which nearly played down to a bracelet on Day 37 was event #54, the $1k NL Holdem one. 15 players returned to action in this one, looking to take home the $500k top prize. The end of the day came and the winner was still unknown. Like event #53, #54 only managed to play down to its heads-up stage, so the two remaining players, Luis Campelo and Will Jaffe will return to battle it out on Day 4 of the tournament.
At the beginning of the day, David Baker was among the players, but he busted out soon, in 13th place, at the hands of Luis Campelo, picking up $22.6k for his efforts.
The final table bubble burst when Brett Schwertley pushed all his remaining chips into the middle on a Ad,Qd against an opponent’s pocket Ks. The board gave him a pair of Qs but it was too little too late and the final table was set.

Jaffe and Campelo battled it out for two levels heads-up, but they were eventually forced to leave things undecided.
Event #56, the $1.5k NL Holdem one, played down from 305 to 28. Event #57, the $10k NL Holdem 6-handed event, saw action as well: 474 players bellied up to its tables, playing down to 167 by the end of the day.
