Day 4 saw the
2012 WSOP finally gather proper momentum: the Rio was packed as no fewer than 4 events were ongoing and at the end of it, the first open-event bracelet of this year’s Series has finally found its proud owner.
Event #2, the $1.5k NL Holdem one, saw Brent Hanks rise to the top, out of a final table which included players like Vanessa Selbst (who seems to be on fire lately), JP Kelly and Andrew Badecker. The first of these major sources of threat to leave the action was JP Kelly, who ran a 10s, 9s into Michael Kaufmann’s pocket Ks to find himself crippled. He then put the last of his chips into the middle against the eventual winner and the result is easy to guess.
Vanessa Selbst made it all the way to 4th place, where she eventually succumbed to Andrew Badecker. The heads-up stage of the event saw Hanks dispose of Bazeley for the win.
Event #3, the $3k Heads-up NLH/PLO mixed event saw 64 players return to its tables on day 4. The field successfully played down to the final 8: Annette Obrestad, Justin Bonomo, Andy Frankenberger, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and John Racener all made the cut.
Each and every one of them played 3 grueling heads-up matches on day 4 to advance.
Event #4, the $1.5k Seven Card Stud hi/lo 8 or better event, saw 198 players return to action. At the end of the day, only 23 of these players were still standing, as Xuan Liu had locked up the chip lead. Chris Tryba also finished the day with a more than respectable stack. Phil Ivey and Barry Greenstein were all among the victims of the day.
Event #5, the $1.5k PL Holdem one saw a new WSOP rule applied for the first time: at the end of the regular playing time, there were 79 players left, only 8 players shy of the money bubble. After a short break, the field reconvened and the action resumed till the final 71 was reached. Antonio Esfandiari finished with the chip lead in this one.
