On Day 40 of the
2012 WSOP, the pace of the action slowed down a little bit as only 4 events played out instead of the usual 5-6. Two events were scheduled to play down to their respective winners, but neither of them managed to achieve that objective.
The $10k NL Holdem event (#57) saw a whole bunch of high profile players return to the tables, among them Eugene Katchalov, Nick Maimone, Jason Mercier, Shannon Shorr and Andrew Lichtenberger.
Eugene Katchalov’s tournament adventure didn’t last long on Day 40: he was the first one to bite the dust. He got his chips into the middle on a Ks, Js against Shannon Shorr’s Ac,Qc. The board gave Shorr a pair of Qs with an A kicker and Katchalov was out in 21st, picking up a rather decent reward for his efforts. Jason Mercier didn’t last much longer in the tournament either: he busted out when his A,10 fell to Shorr’s K,10.
Nick Maimone made it much further: he busted out in 9th place, followed to the rail by Layne Flack in 8th. Gregory Merson and Keith Lehr made it to the heads-up stage of the event and that’s where the action was stopped.
Event #58, the $3k PLO Hi/Lo split 8 or better one, saw 31 players return to its tables at the beginning of the day. David Baker and Scotty Nguyen were both among the contestants. Nguyen bit the dust in 8th place at Baker’s hands no less. For a while there Baker looked like he would not stop short of winning the bracelet, but Roch Cousineau managed to send him to the rail in 4th place after all.
As soon as the 3-handed stage was reached, the action was called, so no bracelet was awarded in this event either.
The other two events which saw action were the $1k NL Holdem event’s second day 1 flight and the $10k 2-7 Lowball event (#60). Konstantin Puchov finished with the chip lead in the latter.
