2012 WSOP – Day 42 Report

Day 42 of the 2012 WSOP carried special significance: the Main Event kicked off. For Nick Schulman, the significance of the day was an entirely different one though: he managed to take down his second WSOP bracelet, by winning the $10k 2-7 NL Lowball event. There was another bracelet winner on Day 42 too: Dominik Nitsche, who won event #59, the $1k NL Holdem one.

Event #59 saw 51 players return to the green felt to play down to a winner. Jake Cody was among the survivors, together with start of the day chip leader Alex Cordero. Cody’s short-ish stack didn’t really help him: he busted out in 35th place.
Cordero on the other hand, pieced together a pretty successful run: he made it all the way to 3rd place, where he picked up $291.7k.
Nitsche’s bracelet dash began when he knocked out Yoav Tanenbaum in 14th place. That pot gave him a nice thrust and he never looked back. By the time the final table was set, Nitsche had a commanding chip lead. The heads-up stage of the event saw Nitsche square off against Jonathan Hilton. The final hand of the poker tournament was a straight over straight affair, in which the advantage swung Nitsche’s way. He picked up $654.7k for his efforts. The runner-up was rewarded with 405.1k.

Event #60, the $10k NL 2-7 Lowball event, played down to a winner as well. Only 10 players returned to the tables on the final day of the event, among them John Juanda and Nick Schulman. Schulman was the one who rose to the top, besting Mike Wattel heads-up. Juanda made it all the way to 6th place, to pick up a $41.2k reward. Schulman’s cut of the pie was a massive $294.3k. Wattel picked up $181.8k for his efforts.

1,066 players showed up for the first day 1 flight of the 2012 WSOP Main Event. Pius Heinz, the reigning champion was among them. Phil Hellmuth played too, but he got knocked out early. William John was the one who finished with the largest stack.
