2012 WSOP – Day 49 Report

Day 39 of the 2012 WSOP was a rather efficient one in terms of players sent to the rail. 282 players bellied up to the tables at the beginning of the day, among them start of the day chip leader Paul Volpe. When the dust settled, 97 players were still in contention. The chip leader at the end of the day was Kyle Keranen. Keranen’s ride to the top was everything but a smooth one though. Paul Volpe and several other players kept trading the top position among them all the way to the end of the day. Although the field has been bleeding notables every day from the start of the event, there are still a few ‘name’ players left in the running: Vanessa Selbst survived day , together with Gavin Smith, Jason Somerville, and one of the early chip leaders: Gaelle Baumann.

Daniel Negreanu was one of the players who garnered plenty of attention as he made his way through the field. His 2012 WSOP Main Event run came to an end on Saturday though. He fell midway through the day, to Kevin Pollak. Pollak was the one who made the all-in move, with an Ac, Qc and Negreanu made the call with a Kd, Qd. Nothing fell on the board to help Negreanu and he was out in 160th place. Other ‘name’ players who also were eliminated were: JP Kelly, Sorel Mizzi, Freddy Deeb, Chance Kornuth, Matt Marafioti and Joseph Cheong. Cheong got his chips into the middle on pocket 10s against Paul Volpe’s A,K. He was out of luck though: a K fell on the flop to give his opponent the lead and as the turn and the river bricked, he was eliminated in 116th place.
Kevin Pollak, the one responsible for Daniel Negreanu’s demise, was eliminated as well: he bit the dust at the hands of Omar Saed at the end of a Q,Q vs Q,Q match-up. Saed ended up hitting a heart flush for the bust.
