2012 WSOP – Day 8 Report

Although it seemed like event #6, the $5k NL Holdem Mix Maxed one would play down to a winner without much of an effort on Day 8, things took an unexpected turn once it got down to the Aubin Cazals – Warwick Mirzikinian match-up. Joseph Cheong made quick work of Hugo Lemaire. Barely did the heads-up bout kick off, Cheong managed to trap his opponent in a perfect hand situation, with a set against Lemaire’s pocket rockets. Lemaire didn’t let go of the rockets and thus he was forced to part with the majority of his chips in that hand. From there on out it was a mere formality for Cheong to close out the match which he did indeed successfully accomplish.
The other match-up of the event lasted for over six hours though and it was marred by controversy. It was also a nasty slugfest, with things pretty much even till the last hand of the day. Mirzikinian was the one who made the move holding a K,10o. Cazals called with A,Ko and the race was on. The board fell a bunch of blanks and Cazals scooped up the pot, eliminating his opponent in 3rd place. Mirzikinian picked up $162.4k for his efforts.
It was then that things got a little out of hand as Cheong and Cazals wanted to finish their match-up right away and the tournament directors didn’t allow them to. Eventually, the matter was settled, and the time was set for Monday noon.

The only event which awarded a bracelet on Day 8 of the WSOP was event #8, the $1.5k Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or better event. Herbert Tapscott was the one who clinched the title besting none other than Gavin Griffin heads-up. Griffin picked up $163k for his second place, while Tapscott was rewarded with $264.4k.
Event #9, the $1.5k NL Holdem Re-entry one had its second day 1 flight kick off. More than 1,000 players showed up.
The $5k Seven Card Stud event kicked off too, drawing a starting field of 141 players.
