Day 9 of the
2012 WSOP saw one player pick up his gold bracelet, although this time, the winner was quite possibly more deserving than any of the 2012 winners thus far, on account of the amount of heads-up work he had had to put in for his title: Aubin Cazals was that winner, and he managed to rise to the top in the $5k NL Holdem Mix Maxed event which was indeed the longest running one of the Series thus far. Cazals came off a marathon heads-up bout against Warwick Mirzikinian, a match-up which dragged on so long that the finals had to be re-scheduled for Monday on its account. Joseph Cheong, the other finalist on the other hand made quick work of his semifinal opponent, and thus he had had a good rest before the final confrontation.
The two players were roughly even in chips when the last stretch of the event kicked off: they both had around 3 million, and the fact that the blinds were quite low in comparison gave them plenty of room to maneuver.
The two players jostled for position for a while, but after 4 hours of back and forth action, the tournament was suddenly over. First, it was Cazals who built up a bit of a lead, then Cheong stormed back to clinch the top stack. Cazals then took over again and thus it went until Cheong decided to 6-bet all-in with a pair of 4s in his pocket. Cazals made the call with pocket Ks and watched as the flop gave him another K for the set. The turn and the river extinguished all hope in Cheong’s corner and the event was finally over. Cazals picked up $480.5k for his efforts. The reward of the runner-up was $296.9k.
The other events which saw action on day 9 were the $1.5k NL Holdem Re-entry one, the $5k Seven Card Stud one and the $1.5k PLO one (event #11).
