With the
2012 WSOP final table showdown just over the horizon, the various final table participants are already making plans to invest their winnings and to preferably change their life-style. Russell Thomas, the 24 year old amateur player from Pennsylvania, has always been a working man, although has isn’t exactly a stranger at the green felt either. Thomas is already guaranteed a $754.7k payday, although he still has a theoretical chance to grab the top prize of $8.5 million. That much would definitely be enough for him to give up his job and to become a professional poker player. He has obviously always had a passion for the game: he has already cashed in three WSOP events, taking down a total of $126.7k in profits.
If he were to win – unlike some of the previous Main Event champions – he would definitely be a fighting champ. Also, unlike the other October Nine participants, he won’t be alone at the final table, in the sense that he’ll be battling it out with a friend by his side: chip leader Jesse Sylvia. The two of them were roommates during the 2010 WSOP, after they had met online.
According to Russell, he was out of shape at the start of the WSOP, on account of not being able to play because of Black Friday, therefore his main goal during the time-off preceding the October Nine was to whip his game into shape.
He also said he had taken a three-weeks’ vacation from work for the WSOP and that he never went back after making the final table. He said he did train his replacement and he hasn’t yet resigned, but that the chances were high that he would go pro after the event.
