2013 Aussie Millions – Day 2 Report

The second day of the 2013 Aussie Millions’ Main Event saw 312 players belly up to the tables. When the action was called, 68 of them were left standing, with James Obst leading the way into Day 3. Obst managed to accumulate a little over 1 million chips. He was followed by Scott Wilson with 933k chips and Mervin Chan in 3rd place, with 774.5k.
The start of the day chip leader was Brian Payne, who brought a stack of almost 300k chips to the tables. Payne failed to get anything going though and the field was quick to swallow him. His demise began with a hand against Mark Teltscher, which saw him drop under the 200k chip mark for the first time on Day 2. He hung in there for a couple more hours after that, but he eventually hit the rail.
Payne was joined at the rail by a pretty illustrious crowd, which included Spehen Chidwick, Eoghan O’Dea, Joe Hachem, Annette Obrestad and Neil Channing.
Chidwick got his last few chips into the middle on an A,Ko against Ray Ellis who has a pretty dominating K,K. The board failed to come to his rescue and Chidwick was gone.
Nate Silver was among those eliminated as well. He pushed his last chips into the middle on pocket Ks and got a call from Gary Benson, who had pocket rockets. The rockets held and Silver’s
poker tournament came to an end as well.
Obst’s success was entirely due to the high level of aggression he adopted. He kept up the pressure and besides busting an opponent here and there, he took down a lot of uncontested pots.
Patrik Antonius shared tables with Phil Ivey for a while during the day and the two dominated the action until the table was broken. They both survived Day 2.
