2013 Aussie Millions Main Event – Day 1A Report

The first day 1 flight of the 2013 Aussie Millions’ Main Event saw 157 players belly up to the tables. At the end of a productive and action-filled day, only 70 of these players were left standing, with Brian Payne leading the pack. Payne managed to build a stack of almost 300k chips. Several “name” players did well in the
poker tournament: James Obst for instance finished near the top of the chip counts. Philip Willcocks and Kevin Rabichow finished with healthy stacks as well.
In Payne’s case, it was quite obvious that his aggression was behind the Day 1A success he enjoyed. He kept adding to his stack through the day, and never stumbled, even though he did log a pretty peculiar hand at one point. He was involved in a pot of about 90k chips, with 9d,7h,6s,2h,2c on the table and he pushed 30k into the middle to get his only opponent all-in. The opponent made the call and they both tabled Ax, Qx for the chop.
In all the hustle of the Day 1A action, several “name” players fell by the side. One of them was Oliver Speidel, the 2012 winner of this same event. David Gorr, the 2011 champion, was eliminated as well, so it’s safe to say there will be no repeat winners this year. Gorr lost his tournament life on a textbook coin-flip: he pushed all-in, holding pocket 6s against Tobias Schwecht’s A,Ko. The board gave the German the pot though and Gorr was done.
Rupert Elder didn’t fare much better either: he made it past the dinner break, but barely. Immediately after the break, he dropped a massive pot to an opponent when his K,Q got called with A,K. His life-line was officially severed a few hands later.
