2013 Borgata Fall Poker Open – First Event in the Books

The first event of the 2013 edition of the Borgata Fall Poker Open was a truly massive affair: featuring a $560 buy-in, the poker tournament had 4 Day 1 flights, unfolding over a rather unusual structure: everyone could play in as many Day 1s as he/she wanted, and in the end, players would take their best Day 1 stacks into Day 2, provided they managed to make it at all.
The event offered a $1 million guarantee, but by the time registration was closed, some 2,899 buy-ins were in the middle, enough for a $1.45 million prize-pool. A total of 250 players ended up paid, but none of them took home a larger chunk of the prize-pool than winner Greg Himmelbrand of Queens, who walked away with $243.6k.

The one who started the final table with the largest stack was George Alberto, of Clifton, NJ. Alberto failed to take advantage of his large stack though: he fell by the side in 7th place eventually, picking up $43.4k for his efforts.
Even though Luis Diaz was the official short-stack at the start of the final table hostilities, the first player to bite the dust was Lorenzo Desmond, who picked up $14k for his 10th place.
Diaz, the short-stack, went on to stitch together a truly impressive run: he was actually the one Himmelbrand defeated heads-up for the title.
His second place earned him a $157.9k prize. Simon Lam was the player who fell in 3rd place, collecting $103.4k. None of the other players managed to cross the $100k mark. 4th place man Edward Jacobs was only rewarded with $87.9k.
Himmelbrand, the winner, is not a stranger to the live tournament scene: back in July, he finished second in Caesars Palace Mega Stack Series Championship event, picking up $241k.
