2013 Poker Retrospective – Part 1

With the end of the year fast approaching, the time for retrospectives is once again upon us. In this first part of what we’re looking to make into a comprehensive and all-encompassing 2013 poker retrospective series, we take a look at some of the more cringe-worthy poker moments of the year.
Phil Ivey has been known as the face of the poker/online poker world for quite a while now, and even though he chose to stay out of the spotlight for a while after the Black Friday implosion of Full Tilt Poker, he re-emerged last year, taking his usual place at the top of the poker pops.
Besides being a successful world-class poker professional, people know Ivey as a hardcore gambler too. He is the sort of gambler however who – unlike scores of his peers – is much more likely to win than lose.

In August last year, he played Punto Banco baccarat at Crockfords Casino with an associate and he walked away from the tables with a £7.8 million profit. The casino refused to pay out his winnings though, citing foul play on his part. Despite a lot of personal back and forth between the two parties, the winnings were still not paid out by May, 2013. It was then that Ivey decided to take the litigious affair to the next level and he filed a lawsuit against the gambling establishment.
Regarding the issue, Ivey commented that he was deeply saddened that he had been forced to take the matter into court. He had built up a close business relationship with Crockfords, where he played a lot, winning and losing quite a bit there over the years.
Apparently, during the session which resulted in his above said winnings, Ivey had been down about £500k at one point, before bouncing back and taking the house to the cleaners.
