2013 Poker Retrospective – Part 14

It has lately developed into something of a trend that every year, one of the legendary top pros turns in a breakout performance. The pros have been taking turns at it too: last year, Phil Hellmuth was the one who surprised the poker world by winning WSOP bracelets left and right and generally dominating the live tournament action. This year, Daniel Negreanu was the one to slip into beast-mode, and unlike Hellmuth – who isn’t exactly a fan favorite – Negreanu brought more charisma and an overall much more positive vibe to the tables than the Poker Brat. 2013 has definitely been a breakout year for the Canadian in several ways. He essentially turned his entire life upside down in a good way. He started off by hiring a personal trainer, and he began drinking freshly juiced vegetable drinks. He also grew out his hair (some “malicious” tongues say he had a hair transplant) and took his tournament game to the next level, winning and dominating various major live events through the year.

The Canadian pro credits the development of his emotional intelligence as the single biggest factor in his 2013 success. His newfound self-confidence allowed Negreanu to push his limits in other ways too in 2013: in January, he took part in the Bravo Network’s Millionaire Matchmaker, which pushed him into the limelight in a completely novel way. While he failed to find his dream wife through the show, he did reap the benefits of added national exposure.
He also made an appearance on Mr. D, a Canadian sitcom.

Besides all his poker playing and TV-appearances, Negreanu also found time to put in some effective charity-work.
Poker-wise, Negreanu’s superb 2013 run kicked off in April, when he made some deep runs in the WSOP APAC. He ended up winning the Main Event of the Series, for his 9th WSOP gold.
