2013 Poker Retrospective – Part 16

Having covered some of the best moments of 2013, it is now time to take off the rose-tinted glasses and to take a walk on the dark side again. Just as some of the good moments were bigger and most significant than the others, some of the bad moments of the year outweighed the others through an extra dose of cringe-worthiness and negativity.
One of these moments was by definition Sheldon Adelson’s announced crusade against legal and regulated online poker. Now then, Sheldon Adelson has been the arch-enemy of online poker and gambling for quite a while now, a position which isn’t exactly surprising when one considers the fact that Adelson is indeed one of the biggest live casino moguls of the world. No, he did not become the enemy of online gaming in 2013, but he did decide to start doing something against online gaming last year.
He kicked off his offensive in style, with an article titled “Online Poker is Fools Gold” published by Forbes, in which he demonized the game, blowing every single one of its drawbacks well out of proportion, while chastising fellow live casino operators for having jumped on the online gaming bandwagon by launching sites of their own in Nevada and New Jersey.
Even though he may be fighting a losing battle against progress, if anyone can do any damage against online poker these days, due to his financial means and connections, Adelson is definitely that person.

Another prime “worst poker story of the year” candidate is Gus Hansen’s nightmarish 2013 run, which saw one of poker’s most popular faces dig himself into an $8.4 million hole. His problems are way worse than that though. Since Full Tilt Poker was re-launched and since he signed on as their in-house pro again, he’s incurred losses in excess of $11 million.
