2013 Poker Retrospective – Part 4

Having taken a look at some of the most cringe-worthy and embarrassingly negative poker and online poker moments of 2013, the time has finally come to shift the focus of our retrospective towards the more positive realm of big accomplishments and awe-inspiring moves.
The first such pleasantly surprising moment of the year was Canada’s absolute domination of the 2013 World Series of Poker. Event after event, players from Canada had their hands raised in victory, walking away with massive prizes even in the events in which they failed to go all the way. Indeed, no fewer than 10 Canadian players finished the 2013 WSOP a bracelet richer. As a just reward and recognition of the accomplishments of the Canadian contingent in general and of his own in particular, PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu was handed the 2013 WSOP Player of the Year title.
Former Player of the Year winners did extremely well at the WSOP this year indeed. Besides Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren, Jeff Madsen and Tom Schneider also walked away with gold bracelets.
It only took the Canadians 12 events to score no fewer than 4 bracelets, which pretty much means that at that point in the Series, they had already locked up a third of the available bracelets. Before the 50% mark of the Series was reached, 3 more Canadians had their names added to the list of the winners.
The accomplishment was even more impressive in light of the fact that in 2012, Canada had only secured 3 gold pieces.

Obviously, the bracelet count was dominated by Americans, who took down 41 of the available pieces of jewelry, not surprising at all, considering that almost 72% of the overall entrants in the Series were from the US. Canadians made up only 5.2% of the overall player-pool.
PokerStars offers several handy and cheap ways to major live poker events like the EPT and the WSOP. Sign up now and join start playing in their online qualifiers.
