2013 Poker Retrospective – Part 7

2013 as a whole hasn’t been too kind to some of the high-profile poker professionals, and among them, former
WSOP Main Event Champions took up a special place. Despite his great WSOP-C run, Greg Raymer, the former
PokerStars pro was one of the former champions who found themselves in legal hot water.
Back in March, the always placid Raymer got arrested for allegedly having solicited the services of a prostitute. Although in the beginning it had been reported that it was a “male prostitution sting” which led to his arrest, it was later specified that there was no “male” element involved in it. Raymer had apparently fallen victim to a sting set up by the Wake Forest police, responding to an ad posted by an undercover officer on a website apparently often used for such purposes by local practitioners of the oldest profession in the world.
The sting ended up netting 6 other “victims” besides Raymer, but that was obviously slim consolation for the champion. To his credit, confirming his no-nonsense image, Raymer reacted as well as he possibly could have under the given circumstances: he admitted guilt, he apologized to his family, fans and the public at large expressing sincere regret about the whole situation.
His bond set at $1k, the Fossilman got out and he returned to the poker circuit almost right away. He completed 75-hours of community service at one of the local nonprofit organizations and as a result of that, all charges against him in the case were dropped in October 2013. He also agreed to undergo mental health assessment and in the end – although initially astonished – the poker world moved on, putting the whole Greg Raymer prostitution incident behind without any significant issues.
Raymer has since also made up for the misstep through his success in the WSOP-C’s various events.
