2013 Poker Retrospective – Part 9

In the third and last part of our “Champions in a pickle” segment, we take a look at Jamie Gold and Joe Cada, both of whom landed in legal trouble in 2013.
Like Jerry Yang – whose woes we’ve discussed in our previous piece – the 2006 winner of the Main Event and beneficiary of the biggest ever prize awarded by the Main Event, Jamie Gold, was also forced to bid farewell to his WSOP bracelet, in a similarly unceremonious manner. His piece of WSOP history just popped up at Heritage Auctions, and it was eventually sold for $65.7k. Gold said having the bracelet auctioned off didn’t happen by his choice. The current owner chose to remain anonymous and Heritage Auctions didn’t reveal any information about him/her either.

The other former champion who had a run-in with law enforcement in 2013 was Joe Cada. The 2009 Main Event winner had set up a poker-themed sports-bar in his home town, and he apparently sold liquor there without a license.
Cada’s Sports Bar and Grill was the establishment which the champion started with his father back in 2011. The liquor license question wasn’t a simple one either: according to Michigan Liquor Control Commission and the Sterling Heights Police Department, the bar had first applied for a liquor license transfer in October, 2011. The application was amended in 2012, but the license was never awarded, as it is still being held for consideration by the LLC. Unlike the woes of some of the other champions we’ve covered, this one wasn’t particularly appalling, especially considering the fact that Joe himself wasn’t even directly involved in the day-to-day affairs of the operation.
Of course, there were members of the poker community who tried to blow it out of proportion, making it a bad mark against Cada, but on the whole, the issue blew over without much ado.
